GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE
Scientists agree, climate change is occurring and it is happening faster and more aggressively than first forecast. To avoid the perils of runaway climate change we must quickly take steps to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.
BC’s PUBLIC SECTOR CHALLENGE:
2010 is coming and with it the requirement for all British Columbian Public Sector Organizations (PSO) to be carbon neutral under the Provincial Government’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Targets Act (GGRTA). As early as June 2009 PSOs must report to the Province on progress made toward this target, and on January 1, 2010 the carbon counter will start ticking.
STRATEGY:
Under GGRTA, PSOs must report on their emissions levels and actions they have taken to reduce these levels, as well as outline plans for minimizing emissions going forward. Any emissions that remain after reduction interventions must be neutralized by way of purchased offsets. To assist PSOs meet these targets, the Province has pre-qualifie
